Executive Summary

The ASEAN India FTA (AIFTA) is ailing and needs urgent redressal. Functional since January 2010, it aimed to boost regional trade integration and enhance India's relations with the ten ASEAN nations by reducing or eliminating tariffs on various goods. Initially focusing on cross-border trade of goods, the AIFTA expanded in 2015 to include Services and Investment. While the agreement has positively impacted bilateral trade volumes, it has also brought about several unfavorable outcomes for India's domestic economy. Despite the intended benefits of promoting trade integration and fostering stronger ties with ASEAN nations, the AIFTA has presented challenges that need to be addressed to ensure a more balanced and beneficial trade relationship for India.
